Thickness is the most overlooked spec on a turning insert. A thicker insert resists the bending load that a deep cut applies, and it conducts heat away from the cutting zone more effectively. The DNMG 150608 is a third thicker than a standard CNMG 120408, and on heavy cuts you feel that difference in edge stability rather than in the catalogue.

That is why the DNMG is often the right answer on larger diameter shaft work and on machines that will happily pull a deep cut – it takes the load without the corner deflecting.

When to Choose DNMG

  • Combined roughing and profiling on the same component, where you do not want to index between two tools.
  • Larger diameter shaft turning where the cut is deep and the insert needs the thickness.
  • Shallow contours that a CNMG cannot follow but which do not need the extreme reach of a VNMG.
  • Heavier cuts on capable machines where the extra thickness translates directly into edge stability.

  • Slender or long components. A negative insert pushes the workpiece away, and on a long shaft that means taper and chatter. The positive VBMT reduces that deflection.
  • Thin walls and small diameters. Anything that will move under radial force.
  • Finishing passes where surface finish is the deliverable. The sharper cutting action leaves a better finish at the same feed.
  • Older or less rigid machines. If the machine chatters under a negative insert, the answer is usually a positive insert, not a slower feed.

The trade-off is edge count and edge strength. The VBMT is single sided, so you get two usable points instead of four, and the ground clearance means less carbide behind the edge. Use it for what it is – a finishing and light profiling insert.

The VNMG buys you access at the cost of strength. There is very little carbide behind a 35 degree point, so this insert is not a roughing tool and treating it as one is the most common way to destroy a set.

  • Use it for copy turning shallow contours, profiling, back turning, reaching into corners and undercuts, and finishing shaped components in one clean pass.
  • Do not use it for heavy roughing, interrupted cuts, or scaled bar. Rough with a CNMG, then profile with the VNMG.
  • Keep depths of cut modest. The sharp point will take a finishing or semi-finishing depth. Load it like a roughing insert and the point breaks.

The TNMG 160408 is the most common turning insert question and the answer is genuinely about the job, not about price.

  • TNMG gives six corners against four, so the cost per cutting edge is roughly a third lower for the same insert price.
  • CNMG has a stronger corner. The 80 degree included angle puts far more carbide behind the cutting point than the 60 degree triangle does. On heavy roughing, on interrupted cuts, or on scaled bar stock, that difference decides whether the corner survives.
  • The practical rule – use TNMG for general turning, facing and light to medium roughing on clean material where you want the most edges for the money. Use CNMG when the cut is heavy, interrupted, or on scale.

Shops that run TNMG on heavy interrupted work to save money almost always spend more, because they lose corners to fracture rather than wearing them out.

PC9030 is a PVD coated grade sitting in the ISO M25 to M35 range. It was developed for medium and heavy roughing with interrupted cutting in stainless steel, and it delivers strong resistance to chipping and to welding – the two failure modes that kill inserts in stainless.

That toughness is also why it works so well as a single-grade solution for a job shop. A grade that survives interrupted cuts in stainless will comfortably handle continuous cuts in mild steel. The reverse is not true, and that is why shops that standardise on a cheap steel grade end up scrapping inserts every time a stainless job comes in.
