APMT16 Milling Insert for Heavy Shoulder and Face Milling

The APMT 1604, or APMT16, is the larger sibling of the APMT 1135. At 16 mm nominal cutting edge length and 4.5 mm nominal thickness, it takes a substantially deeper cut and carries far more load, which is what you need when the cutter body is 50 mm or larger and the machine has the power to drive it.

The geometry is the same principle – positive rake, single sided with a chipbreaker, producing a true 90 degree wall. What changes is the scale of what it can remove per pass.

Description

When to Move Up From APMT 1135 to APMT16

  • Your axial depth of cut exceeds what the 11 mm insert supports. This is the main reason and it is not negotiable – overloading a smaller insert is a false economy.
  • Your cutter body is 50 mm diameter or larger. Larger bodies are pocketed for the larger insert.
  • You have the spindle power and the machine rigidity. A bigger insert taking a bigger cut needs a machine that can push it. On an underpowered or worn machine the APMT 1135 at a lighter depth will out-perform it.
  • You are removing a lot of material from solid. Fewer, deeper passes beat many shallow ones when the machine can take it.
