When to Choose VBMT Over VNMG
- Slender or long components. A negative insert pushes the workpiece away, and on a long shaft that means taper and chatter. The positive VBMT reduces that deflection.
- Thin walls and small diameters. Anything that will move under radial force.
- Finishing passes where surface finish is the deliverable. The sharper cutting action leaves a better finish at the same feed.
- Older or less rigid machines. If the machine chatters under a negative insert, the answer is usually a positive insert, not a slower feed.
The trade-off is edge count and edge strength. The VBMT is single sided, so you get two usable points instead of four, and the ground clearance means less carbide behind the edge. Use it for what it is – a finishing and light profiling insert.
