CNMG 120408 HM PC9030 Carbide Turning Insert

If your shop stocks one turning insert, this is the one. The CNMG 120408 is an 80 degree rhombic negative insert with a 12.7 mm inscribed circle, 4.76 mm thickness and a 0.8 mm nose radius. Being negative it is double sided, giving four usable cutting corners, and the 80 degree included angle puts enough material behind the cutting edge to take a genuine roughing depth of cut.

Supplied in the PC9030 grade with the HM chipbreaker, this is the general purpose external turning insert for CNC lathes – facing, roughing, and semi-finishing across steel and stainless steel.

About the CNMG 120408 HM PC9030 Grade

PC9030 is a PVD coated grade sitting in the ISO M25 to M35 range. It was developed for medium and heavy roughing with interrupted cutting in stainless steel, and it delivers strong resistance to chipping and to welding – the two failure modes that kill inserts in stainless.

That toughness is also why it works so well as a single-grade solution for a job shop. A grade that survives interrupted cuts in stainless will comfortably handle continuous cuts in mild steel. The reverse is not true, and that is why shops that standardise on a cheap steel grade end up scrapping inserts every time a stainless job comes in.
